Studying Romans, I’m clearly reminded that though our culture is one in which merit is rewarded, the ultimate reward comes by no merit of our own. For those who desire the fruit of achievement more than achievement itself, this can be a difficult reckoning. But for those who have fallen far behind in the race to keep up with the status quo, it’s great news. Every day at the mission, we meet people who have fallen behind, due often to circumstances outside their control. Collin fell behind afflicted with an illness that was no fault of his own. He, too, is grateful now experiencing God’s undeserved kindness.
“I worked hard for years. At the end of my twenties, my health took a turn for the worse. My throat was swelling up, I was having trouble breathing, and I eventually couldn’t work. I thought it might be the air in the factory where I was working, but changing jobs didn’t fix it. I came to Watered Gardens after I ran out of money.
They’ve provided everything for me. I finally had a place to heal. I’ve changed my whole life style. I quit smoking and drinking. With all that, I was finally able to control how I felt. The swelling went away. I’m setting up a better foundation for my future. I want to help people. I want to share the love I’ve been given with the people I know.”
