I've often wondered what happened to Barabbas, the notorious killer mentioned in all four Gospels. To the crowd's liking, Jesus traded places with him, securing his own crucifixion, while Barabbas walked free.
I wonder if he watched from afar Jesus breathe his last. Did he hear of the resurrection? Did he come to the conclusion that it wasn't by chance he was set free, but rather to be forgiven and reconciled to his Father in heaven? Did his name take on new meaning to him; Bar-abbas or "son of father?" Certainly, if he realized forgiveness from a heinous life full of crime, it would have catalyzed his transformation.
Michael reminded me of the story. He was imprisoned for a gang-related murder for more than 15 years. Prison wasn't his solution. Once out, he ended up in the Joplin jail and then homeless. Not knowing where to go, he came to Watered Gardens.
“I’d never been in a homeless shelter before, but it has been an amazing experience. I was baptized here, and I’m a totally different person from who I was. I’ve developed new habits like reading my Bible every day, and I can’t wait to go to church on Sundays. I have a full-time job and my own car, and now I’m just saving up for my own place. So much of the anger that I used to have is gone, and I’ve developed great friendships with the staff here, at work, and at the church.”
I hope you appreciate the incredible contrast. Like Barabbas, Michael was bound by the guilt of crimes in his former life. But for guys like Barabbas and for Michael, Jesus died. He traded places with them, taking on their sin, guilt, and eternal punishment so they could walk free. Michael's free today because of it and that great transformation took place at Watered Gardens. Thank you for your continued support and efforts. Simply put, your support is helping set captives free.
