I’ve been following a great organization in Florida that is successfully mobilizing local help in response to Hurricane Milton. Better Together understands that when tragedy strikes, local, compassionate response from people close to the need—who understand the need—is vitally important. It’s no different when tragedy strikes an individual like Randall.
After the pandemic, Randall lost his job at a manufacturing plant and then his wife during open-heart surgery. Alone, depressed, and unemployed, he ended up homeless. That’s when we met him and our team began building a relationship with him, helping him make a comeback.
“When you come in here, everyone is so friendly. The Care Coordination team sits down, talks with you, and finds out what you need. Then they put a plan together with you to do what needs to be done. Even just being able to speak with someone in person and be heard matters a lot. When you talk, they actually listen.”
A compassionate response to any tragedy requires that we listen. It also requires that we take time to learn who’s closest to the person in need and thoughtfully include them in the recovery plan. For Randall, it was his brother in North Carolina. Through our encouragement, we helped re-establish that connection. Rather than remaining in our shelter, Randall is on his way to his brother’s.
Your support mobilizes local, compassionate, and wise care for people that do so much more than provide food or shelter; it re-establishes right relationships and forms new ones, too. You're paving the way for comebacks. Thank you.
